Oops. Gail Frantz reminded me by e-mail I forgot all about the six-legged birds we saw at Jug Bay and Merkle: Spring Azure Juvenal's Duskywing Tiger Swallowtail Eastern Comma Zebra Swallowtail Mourning Cloak I know virtually nothing about butterflies. Gail taught me more about them today than I ever knew. I commented that the Duskywing was almost as nondescript as a Bachman's Sparrow. I'm also wondering, is it really named after the ancient Roman satirist Juvenal, or was it just a young Duskywing? (The one butterfly book I own has disappeared, so I'm totally in the dark.) At any rate, checking out the butterflies certainly adds interest to birding, especially when the birds are slow, so I'm going to have to look into this more.
