BIRDS: Myths and Facts about Their Survival: Wednesday, April 21,
7:30 p.m. at the Rust Library. While some birds, such as the
mockingbird and cardinal, thrive through their relationship with
mankind, others are in serious danger. George Fenwick, Head of
the American Bird Conservancy, will describe the threats that
birds face every day. These threats vary from loss of habitat to
pesticides to becoming a meal for our pet cats. Over half of our
bird species spend much of the year outside the United States in
countries that are not only losing habitat at alarming rates, but
still use DDT to control insects. As a results some bird species
are declining at rates that threaten their very existence.

The American Bird Conservancy, one of the driving forces behind
the Partners in Flight Program, is working to ensure that these
fascinating creatures of the air not only continue to survive but
also to thrive in the 21st century. Mr. Fenwick will explain
what each one of us can do to help.
