Hi all -- Barry went down to Rock Creek Park, DC, today -- in the vicinity of the Nature Center. As expected, there were lots of migrants, esp. sparrows, along the ridge and in the vicinity of the Maintenance Yard. He tallied: 1 Louisiana Waterthrush, 2 Pine W., 8 Palm W., 4-5 Black and White W., 2 Wormeating W., 15 Myrtle (Yellow-rumped) W., 4 Ovenbirds, 6 Blue-headed Vireos, 6 Hermit Thrushes, ca. 300 White-throated Sparrows, 6 Swamp. Sp., 4 Savannah Sp., 10 Chipping Sp., 4 Field Sp., ca. 45 Ruby-crowned Kinglets, 8 Blue-gray Gnatcatchers. After lunch, he and I went along the C&O Canal -- we hit Seneca, Hughes Hollow and Sycamore Landing. Still lots of activity, migrants and local breeders both. We saw: ca. 75 Myrtle W., 5 Parula W., 8 Palm W., 1 Yellow W., 3 Prothonotary W., 1 Cerulean W., 3 Prairie W., 4-5 Black and White W., 1 Northern Waterthrush, 3 Blue-headed Vireos, 20 Blue-gray Gnatcatchers, 1 Ruby-throated Hummingbird, 1 Brown Thrasher (heard). About 15 Bonaparte's Gulls, 8 Scaup sp., 2 Canvasbacks, 10 Bufflehead and 4 Blue-winged Teal on the water. The wildflowers are especially nice this year -- carpets of Bluebells, Dutchman's Breeches, Trillium, Blue Phlox. Butterflies seen included Tiger and Zebra Swallowtail, Falcate Orangetip, Comma, and a large Skipper (Dusky??) Gail Mackiernan and Barry Cooper Silver Spring, MD
