grasshopper sparrow on the Mall

ospreyers,

a grasshopper sparrow was present on the Mall today, loosely associating
with a small flock of savannah sparrows in an area of unmown grass,
dandelions (on the seeds of which the sparrows were feeding), and
crabapples between the east end of constitution gardens and the east end
of the reflecting pool. The bird was found by Jim Felley, and is likely
the same individual he located last week slightly to the east.

also present in the immediate vicinity were male baltimore oriole and
eastern towhees, several catbirds, and an eastern kingbird. The Mall may
lack some of the charm and species variety of other migrant hotspots, but
the open space helps greatly with viewing, and convenient nearby urban
amenities include snack stands and the federal government . . .

cheers,

rob
