Horsehead Wetlands Center: 5/6/99

Hi all,



   This is the Wildfowl Trust of North America at Horsehead Wetlands 
Center in Grasonville, Queens Anne County MD report for today. This is 
the third reports this year.

Birds seen:

   1  Double-crested Cormorant
   1  Am. Bittern (seen at 7:30am at SW corner of Lake Knapp)
   1  Least Bittern (same as above, but flush out and disappear)
   1  Great Blue Heron (flyby)
   1  Great Egret (flyby)
   2  Snowy Egret
   6  Green-backed Heron
   6  Mute Swan
  75  Canada Geese (each pair had 1, 6, 6, 8 goslings, rest are in eggs)
  12  Wood Duck (a pair with 8 ducklings)
  58  Mallard (no ducklings, but some hens seen at nests)
   6  Am. Black Duck
   1  Gadwall (drake is mated with a Mallard hen)
   4  Turkey Vulture
   1  Black Vulture
   6  Osprey (all three female at nests)
   1  Bald Eagle (adult)
   1  Virginia Rail (flushed out from under boardwalk)
   2  Killdeer (nest with three eggs found on private road with gravel)
   1  Solitary Sandpiper (Woodland Pond)
   1  Spotted Sandpiper (Chesapeake Bay Pond)
   1  Least Sandpiper (beach & mudflat at end of boardwalk in am)
   1  Pectoral Sandpiper (same as above)
   1  Short-billed Dowitcher (same as above)
   1  Baird's Sandpiper (beach & mudflat at end of boardwalk in am & pm)
   2  Willet (same as above)
   2  Herring Gull
   2  Great Black-backed Gull
   7  Common Tern
   2  Forster's Tern
   3  Least Tern
   8  Mourning Dove
   1  Great Horned Owl
   1  N. Flicker
   1  E. Kingbird
  16  Tree Swallow
   4  N. Rough-winged Swallow

   5  Pine Warbler (both Piney Point Path & Marshy Creek Trail)
   8  C. Yellowthroat (Visitor Center Pond and nearby ponds and marshes)

Pretty slow this week compare to same time last May with 75 species.
