Sorry you found it gratuitous and preachy. In the past I have found
that often folks just don't think about these issues. Until the local
birding shop goes out of business. Sometimes, it just takes someone
mentioning it to sort of get your brain to click onto an idea. I know
that happens with me all the time - I just don't even think about
something until someone else mentions it. There's just too much
information and too many choices out there.

As for folks not having specialty shops in their area, well, that's why
I mentioned Buteo Books and ABA Sales.

What I find gratuitous is people feeling that they have to react to
every little thing that people post here. It gets to the point that you
don't want to make any suggestions or comments, because even the
smallest thing seems to set people off. It may have been appreciated by
a large percentage of people, or it may have been helpful to a large
number of people, but it can be so wearying to have to deal with the few
who get angry/irritated/offended/upset at almost everything and who just
can't let anything go by without a comment.

Although if it was preachy, well, some people need preaching to so maybe
that's actually a good thing.
