Lydia,

It was a nice Rock Creek Park a.m. Glad to have bumped into you guys!

Below, please find the Layhill Park trip report. Please let me know if you
want more details. See you tonight!

Howard

Layhill Park, May 9. Leader: Howard Youth. 8+ participants. A warm, calm
morning; reached low 80s by mid-day. While not a fall-out day, we had many
interesting birds--and 20 more species than last year's sluggish trip.
Species: 85.

Seventeen species of warbler--including a close but typically skulking
mourning--livened up the morning, while cameo appearances by one
white-crowned and one savannah sparrow (on the fence skirting the baseball
diamond) added some spice. Bobolinks tinkled from the nearby trees, and an
osprey and double-crested cormorants kept our eyes to the skies. For many,
the season's first hummingbirds, yellow-billed cuckoo, and indigo buntings
were a sight for sore eyes. We had good numbers for orchard orioles (up to
11) rose-breasted grosbeaks (4), indigo buntings (up to 9), and scarlet
tanagers (6-7). By the time we left at high noon, the birds were tucked
into their green foliage while the soccer players charged over the playing
fields.
