If you're staying in Boise, you're nor far from the Snake River Birds of Prey Area--it's south of the city. The "Watchable Wildlife" book that co-ordinates with the brown binoculars signs is fairly good for Idaho birding locales. I haven't looked for one for Washington. The Lane guide seems good, although I obtained that after I'd been to Idaho and didn't use it there. Also recommend "The Birder's Guide to Oregon" by Joseph Evanich, Jr published by the Portland Audubon Society, in 1990. Format very much like the Lane Guides. Do you have target birds? Or you'll take anything you can find? We found the Klamath Lakes area very interesting. If you want to canoe, get there early, or the boats are all rented for the day. Also especially enjoyed Hurricane Ridge in Olympic Park --though was not a serious birder when I was there, but the wildlife, scenery, butterflies and wildflowers were quite memorable. I've not yet made it to Malheur, so please post a trip report--will make interesting reading. Linda Baker
