I watched two orchard orioles tend a nest this morning in Kinder Park. Despite knowing very little about orchard orioles, I was nonetheless surprised to see the female teamed up with an immature male. The nest was about 7' above the ground in a 9' cherry tree. They regularly brought worms to the nestlings which I only heard. I watched for 15 - 20 minutes and there was no sign of a mature male. Is it possible that the offspring were the product of this 1st yr male? Is adult plumage a part of any causal link to sexual readiness or do the two processes develop more or less independently?
