According to the Yellow Book, Brown Pelican sightings in Dorchester County are to be reported to Maryland Birdlife. I think this notation may need to be revised. As a continuation of our lab's Pfiesteria monitoring project, we've been motoring from Solomons across the bay to the Hooper Straits then up the Transquaking and Chicamacomico Rivers on the north end of Fishing Bay (the eastern boundary of Blackwater NWR). Two weeks ago (6/7) and again yesterday (6/22), we have seen large numbers (40+) Brown Pelicans hanging out on the pound nets in the Hooper Straits and well up into Fishing Bay. They are probably being under-reported because of insuffient access.

Anyway, if you're looking for Brown Pelican for your Dochester County list, put a boat in on the south side of Hooper's Island and head out into the sound!

Good Birding!
