Dear Scott: I very strongly recommend that for the more northerly areas you'll be visiting, you obtain John Kemper's Birding Northern California. I just got back from Northern California, and though I didn't get in as much birding as I would have liked, this guide was invaluable. Here's the http for it on amazon.com: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/1560448326/002-5667603-3878047 A specific tip: if you need Tricolored Blackbird, there's a sure fire spot for it in Monterey County. From Monterey, take Route 68 north towards Salinas. I'm not certain how far up Route 68 the spot is (in the 5-10 mile range), but watch for the entrance to Laguna Seca Recreation Area on the left. There are marshes in this area crawling with Tricoloreds. I had my best views from the shoulder of Route 68. Have a great trip! We're heading to LA, Barstow, Death Valley, Lone Pine, Devil's Postpile, Mono Lake area, Yosemite, San Fran, Monterrey, Ventura (hopefully the Channel Islands), and then fly out of LA again. Any tips on locations in these areas for good birding? Thanks a million. Scott Guzewich Bel Air
