Ospreyers,

Here's an opportunity to see a ton of great seabirds on some of the best-led
trips off either coast. I highly recommend Brian Patteson's pelagic trips.

Of course I have no financial interest, etc. I simply want to insure that
Brian will be able to continue running a full schedule since there are still
some pelagic species that I would like to see off NC. Besides, the birding
on those trips is extraordinary. Go have a ball!

Subject: PARTICIPANTS NEEDED FOR JULY PELAGIC TRIPS

Dear Seabirders,

After a very successful winter and spring season, during which we ran 14
trips (of which all but two were sold out), we still have many more
trips planned, but only one of these is sold out so far- the two day
trip on July 31 and August 1. I would like to thank everyone who has
traveled with us so far and those folks who will be coming out over the
next several weeks for helping us to run a big schedule of trips here
off Cape Hatteras. In contrast to the winter and spring however, so far
we only have only a few people signed up for our next four trips- July
17, 24 and 25 from Hatteras aboard the Miss Hatteras, and Monday, July
19 from Manteo aboard the Country Girl. Over the past few years, during
late July, we have seen just about anything that one can expect on the
May and June trips, including rarities like Trinidade, Fea's, and
Bermuda Petrels and both Red-billed and White-tailed Tropicbirds. We
have also seen Masked Booby several times in July and White-faced
Storm-Petrel once in July. Both Black-capped Petrel and Band-rumped
Storm-Petrels are often numerous on these trips, and we should also see
good numbers of both Cory's, Greater, and Audubon's Shearwaters, as well
as a few Bridled Terns. Last year we did really well on trips from
Hatteras with Trinidade (Herald) Petrels in July and August, and during
some summers we have seen tropicbirds on more than half of our trips in
late July. To see the results of previous trips during this period,
visit our website- http://www.patteson.com/july.htm
Right now, we REALLY NEED MORE PEOPLE to be able to run the trips on
both July 17 and 19. This seems surprising since we've had so many good
trips in July in years past, but I guess that some people don't realize
that both July and August can be just as good for rarities as May and
June, and there are usually a lot more seabirds to look at in summer
too.

Even our trips on August 7 and 8 still have plenty of space open. Some
may recall that last year on August 8 we saw 15 species of pelagic
seabirds, including one new species for North America- SWINHOE'S
STORM-PETREL. We also have room on Gulf Stream trips from Hatteras on
August 14 and 28, and from Manteo on August 16 (Monday) and 21.

New for 1999, we are also offering some special trips to look for
White-faced Storm-Petrels off Oregon Inlet, NC. No one has done this
for years, but there is a history of White-faced sightings from
northeast of Oregon Inlet during the mid 1980's when Dave Lee was
collecting seabirds for the North Carolina State Museum. We still have
a few spaces left on these trips which are sold as two day sets- August
22 and 23 and August 29 and 30. For more information about the
White-faced search trips, consult our website-
http://www.patteson.com/wfsp.htm

As I said before, we have already had some great trips this year,
particularly this spring. To read about those trips look at our site-
http://www.patteson.com/Spring99.htm
and while you're looking at our site don't neglect to look at our high
quality images of seabirds and other marine life, including the first
documented Black-browed Albatross, Bermuda Petrel, and Swinhoe's
Storm-Petrel for the ABA area.

I look forward to seeing many of you on this summer's pelagic birding
trips from the Outer Banks. While our website has a lot of information
about our trips, I'm happy to answer questions at (252) 986-1363 as well
as via e-mail. Please call before 10 PM.
