Earlier i mentioned a Red-breasted Nuthatch on a BBS route in Allegany Co. The reason i commented it was not where i would expect one is that it fit none of the criteria for out-of range nesting -- it was only at 1000 ft elevation and no coniferous trees in sight. ANYWAY, on July 3rd we were sitting on our back porch listening, watching and coffeeing and i felt about 99% sure i heard a RBNU !! Unfortunately it did not respond to my imitations. So today i was at Jug Bay Wetlands Sanctuary and i heard it again. This one was very cooperative responding to my imitations, to the point that i stopped for fear i was doing psychological damage. So lets keep eyes & ears open -- they must be up to something. Oh, also saw Least Terns at North Beach on the 3rd, and a Least Sandpiper. Also saw 2 Spotted Sandpipers at Lake Allen (North Tract, Patuxent) on July 2. With the lake drawn down i wonder if they may have nested there (not that July 2 isn't a perfectly good arrival date) danny bystrak jug bay
