I am hoping that someone may be able to help a person who has addressed a question to the Baltimore Bird Club telephone birdline. This questioner has an injured city tree at her home which they [the city] are to repair. She does not want them to paint the cut part of the tree since she fears that it will kill the birds in her tree. My assumption has been that the coating of a cut in a tree was to close down the vascular system of the tree where it has been cut and prevent rot. Her idea seems to be that the coating is to kill the bugs which might feed on the cut portion. She feels that the birds will take care of the bugs. Though I have a vague memory of reading something in a gardening magazine recently which doubted the effectiveness of the tree paint for the good of the tree, I have no idea whether or not the paint would prove harmful to birds. If anyone has any knowledge of this, please write to me directly. If talking to me would be easier, my number if 410-435-9569. I will wait a day or two before returning her call. Thank you. --Catherine Bishop J. Catherine Bishop ----- Baltimore, MD ----- JCBbishop@worldnet.att.net
