With the tremendous heat and drought, a lot of birds are looking for a source of water. Our neighbors have a little pool with a running spray, but they are on vacation and turned it off. We have a birdbath but in order to attract more birds we put up a "drip" like the ones they use at Bentsen SP in Texas-- just a one-gallon plastic jug with a tiny hole in the bottom -- it takes a couple of days to all drip out but while it does, it makes a constant "plink" "plink" which brings in birds. Birds seen at the drip or nearby (many we didn't know were in the area): Eastern Kingbird Mourning Dove Cardinal Gray Catbird No. Mockingbird Brown Thrasher (unexpected) Chipping Sparrow Song Sparrow Carolina Wren House Wren Carolina Chickadee Tufted Titmouse Am. Goldfinch Am. Robin Pileated Woodpecker (!) Ours is not the "birdiest" of yards, being strictly suburban, but we are trying to attract more species. Our Beebalm is in full bloom and we have at least two female Rubythroats vying for it, as well as a nice Hummingbird Hawkmoth. Oh yes, the "non-bird" resident Chipmunk also uses the drip...
