[MDOsprey] (MDOsprey) Ft. Frederick trip yesterday and today

Went to Ft. Frederick State Park and Big Pool area of C & O Canal 
(Maryland) in Washington County during my living history event with the 
Revoluntary War groups for the field day. During my break after dinner 
Sat., went hiking to Big Pool area.

Birds seen on Sat the 10th and Sun the 11th:


  1  Great Blue Heron
  2  Green-backed Heron
  3  Mallard
  8  Wood Duck (female with 7 youngs in flight over Big Pool (pond)
  5  Turkey Vulture
  1  Black Vulture
  8  Mourning Dove
  1  Yellow-billed Cuckoo (seen at top of tree between river and pond)
  1  Barred Owl (seen at tree at 7:03pm, a mile upstream of canal trail)
  1  Ruby-throated Hummingbird (female seen at ramp of Big Pool on Sat , 
     and zip by our camp early Sun morning)
  1  Belted Kingfisher
  4  Red-bellied Woodpecker (2 adults flew by back and forth over      
hundreds times over our camp feeding 2 youngs near their nest hole)
  1  Downy Woodpecker
  2  N. Flicker (also flew by back and forth over the camp, couldn't    
  find their nest or youngsters)
  1  E. Phoebe
  2  E. Kingbird
  1  Purple Martin (flew over Visitor Center)
 29  N. Rough-winged Swallow (8 over camp and 21 over river)
 26  Barn Swallow (over fields and our camp)
 15  Am. Crow
  9  Fish Crow
  1  Blue Jay
  2  Black-capped Chickadee (seen at highest hill, near Ft. Frederick
  3  Carolina Chickadee (lower elevation at picnic area west of the fort
  1  White-breasted Nuthatch (ramp area of Big Pool)
  3  E. Bluebird (2 adult and a fledging at a artillery firing range    
     area)
  3  Am. Robin
  2  N. Mockingbird
 20  European Starling
  1  N. Parula (a mile upstream along canal trail)
  1  Yellow Warbler  (river edge, 1/4 mile downstream)
  1  Magnolia Warbler (woods area east of Big Pool)
  1  Cerulean Warbler (female at least a mile upstream along canal edge)
  1  Black-and-white Warbler (woods area south of Big Pool)
  1  C. Yellowthroat (1/2 mile upstream)
  1  Baltimore Oriole (top of tree, 1/4 mile upstream on canal trail)
  3  House Sparrow
