Pipevine swallowtail is a large, mostly black butterfly with tail-like projections on the hind wings. There is a striking blue sheen on the top of the hind wing -- especially vibrant in good light. On the underside of the hind wing there is a single row of large, orange spots. Similar (and more common in most of MD) species are spicebush swallowtail, black swallowtail, and the dark form of female tiger swallowtail. Careful about getting that butterfly guide ... butterfly watching is *almost* as addictive as birding! Best wishes, - Mark S. Garland quiltbird@annapolis.net wrote: > > Heloo!
