I second Kathy's recommendation of the MD Breeding Bird Atlas--it's a reference I wouldn't be without. You should also look into two other references that I consider basic. The first, of course, is the Maryland Yellow Book, a publication of the MD Ornithological Society, and an ENORMOUS bargain at only $2. The full title is: "Field List of the Birds of Maryland", by Iliff, Ringler, and Stasz, all of MDOsprey fame (grin). The relevant edition is 3rd Edition, May 1996. In fact, if I could have only one reference work in addition to my field guide for birding in Maryland, it would be this one. To get it send your $2 to Larry Fry, MOS Executive Secretary, at 1202 Ridge Road, Pylesville, MD 21132-1407. If you want an autographed edition, take it up here with the authors. The second text I would recommend is more general in coverage but essential if you want a quick, useable summary of the current state of knowledge about the breeding habits of the birds of North America. That book is: "The Birder's Handbook: A Field Guide to the Natural History of North American Birds" by Ehrlich, Dobkin, and Wheye. Back when I got it (about 1989) the book was $14.95 but I imagine it is a bit steeper now. You should be able to find both of these books in the ANS bookstore and the latter will certainly be available from any good on-line book service such as amazon.com or barnesandnoble.com. best, Norm Saunders Date sent: Thu, 22 Jul 1999 17:49:26 -0600 From: Kathy_Klimkiewicz@usgs.gov (Kathy Klimkiewicz) To: mdosprey@ARI.Net Subject: Re: [MDOsprey] Hummingbird Nest Send reply to: mdosprey@ARI.Net > You might want to get a copy of the MD/DC Breeding Bird Atlas -- it > has good nesting information for the area plus maps, etc. > > Cheers, > Kathy Klimkiewicz > Laurel MD > > > ______________________________ Reply Separator _________________________________ > Subject: [MDOsprey] Hummingbird Nest > Author: mdosprey@ARI.Net at NBS-Internet-Gateway > Date: 7/17/99 10:01 AM > > > Ospreyers, > > My best find for July, a Ruby-throated Hummingbird nest thirty feet from my > house.
