I visted the Papermill Rd. flats in Phoenix, MD yesterday with Debbie Terry and Steve Simon. Good company, but no shorebirds. Not a one. There were a few pools of water, so perhaps the shorebirds will return. On my way home, I checked the beginning of the White Pine circuit at Loch Raven Reservoir (Loch Raven Drive, just past the spot where Dulaney Valley Rd. splits). The first bit of the Reservoir one comes to is very shallow, good for dabbling ducks in the cooler months. On this day, there were extensive mudflats on the north side of this area. Pulling out my scope, I quickly saw SOLITARY SANDPIPER (2), LEAST SANDPIPER (4), and KILLDEER (4). This area looks like good shorebird habitat, and should definitely be checked again.
