Hi. On Monday, I had a chance to chase the ruff at Easton. The ruff proved quicker than me. He was not reported at Easton all day. One observer there theorzed that the the change in the weather last night might have sent it on its way elsewhere. I went on to Hurlock WMA and Blackwater. A modest list follows, with a surprise or two. Great Blue Heron Great Egret Snowy Egret Little Blue Heron Green Heron Black Vulture Turkey Vulture SNOW GOOSE TUNDRA SWAN Mallard Ruddy Duck Osprey NORTHERN HARRIER Red-shouldered Hawk Red-tailed Hawk Killdeer Greater Yellowlegs Lesser Yellowlegs Solitary Sandpiper Spotted Sandpiper Semipalmated Sandpiper Least Sandpiper Pectoral Sandpiper Laughing Gull Great Black-backed Gull Caspian Tern Common Tern Forster's Tern Least Tern Mourning Dove Downy Woodpecker Pileated Woodpecker Eastern Wood-pewee Eastern Kingbird Great Crested Flycatcher Red-eyed Vireo Blue Jay crow (sp) Horned Lark (mixed adults and juveniles) Tree Swallow Northern Rough-winged Swallow Bank Swallow Barn Swallow Carolina Chickadee Tufted Titmouse Carolina Wren Marsh Wren Wood Thrush Gray Catbird Northern Mockingbird European Starling Common Yellowthroat Chipping Sparrow Field Sparrow Grasshopper Sparrow Song Sparrow Northern Cardinal Indigo Bunting Bobolink (more than 100!) Eastern Meadowlark Common Grackle Orchard Oriole House Finch American Goldfinch House Sparrow The snow goose and the tundra swan were both found at Hurlock WMA. The snow goose flapped its wings when it was on shore, and it was evident that it did not have all its flight feathers. I observed the harrier as I drove back to Baltimore. (I was driving on I-97, just South of BWI.) A bit early for harriers? The Bobolink flock observed today at Easton WMA was much larger than the 40 previously reported there. Too bad about the absent ruff! I have only seen a reeve. This bird remains a sex-specific nemesis for me!
