Gemma Radko, Andy Rabin, and myself saw the following at Lilypons (LP) and Oland Road (OR) yesterday: Large mixed flock(s) of swallows on the wires by the bridge (LP), including good number of banks, up to 20 to 30 purple martins (only a few adult males), many imm. tree swallows, and lesser numbers of n. rough-winged. Barn swallows flew by, but alas no cliffs. At LP, an adult yellow-crowned night-heron was eating a crayfish. At OR, 10 or so grasshopper sparrows (many imm.), a singing vesper sparrow, a few savannahs, but no upland sandpipers. A first-year male blue grosbeak was singing, however. We also had an adult male blue grosbeak (LP) and a pair of orchard orioles (still nesting?), also at LP. Howard Youth hmyouth@erols.com Rockville, MD
