Hi all-- Today I received several photographs from the lady who originally reported the Streptopelia dove from Wheaton, MD a couple of weeks ago. Unfortunately (fortunately? I am not sure) it is definitely a Ringed Turtle Dove (S. risoria) and not Eurasian Collared-Dove (S. decaocto). The photos are very good quality and clearly show the pale primaries and short tail with barely visible dark bases to retrices; the bird is also a rather buffy color rather than the more pale gray of E. C-D. If fact, the bird looks a great deal like the individual reported a year ago near Four Corners, which Barry and I checked out. The observer's description of the call (a rolling two-note call) is also typical of Ringed Turtle Dove. E-C-D has a distinctive three-note, more dove-like call -- in fact, it can often be heard in the background of British films and TV shows, as the beasties are everywhere in England! So I guess we are still waiting for the Big One... Cheers, Gail Mackiernan
