This morning we saw the Am. White Pelican near the Wilson Bridge. Some time after 10:30 am we arrived at the fishing area north of the Wilson Bridge near Jones Point, Alexandria, and after several minutes of scanning, Ottavio Janni (I believe) spotted the pelican heading north just north of Wilson Bridge, close to the far shore (Md. shore). It quickly turned around and headed south, crossing the bridge, and flew around south of the bridge. Eventually it flew west. After some 20 minutes, we made our way over to the lighthouse (south of the bridge) at Jones Point and Lisa Shannon and Ottavio both spotted it swimming near a group of gulls in the water way out toward the Bellehaven picnic area. It soon took off, flew toward the middle of the river (back in to Maryland again) and, soaring, gained altitude until it appeared very small and was just under the sun. We last saw the pelican at around 11:45-11:50. I am glad to read that it was spotted later today. Best, Rob Hilton robert@csa.com Bethesda
