I visited the ponds off of Harney Rd. and Bullfrog Rd. in northern Frederick Co. last evening (2 Sep). The Buff-breasted Sandpipers have apparently moved on, as 90 minutes of searching produced none. However, the pond off of Harney Rd., which had more shorebirds than the Bullfrog pond, had an imm. Baird's Sandpiper, clearly standing out among the dozens of Least and Semipals. with its much larger size, overall grayish color, and scaled appearance. There were about as many Mourning Doves on the mudflats as there were shorebirds. The tally for the two locations is as follows: Bullfrog Rd. pond: Blue-winged Teal 7 (flyover) Semipal. Plover 5 Killdeer 28 Lesser Yellowlegs 4 Spotted Sandpiper 3 Least Sandpiper 4 Semipal. Sandpiper 5 White-rumped Sandp. 2 Pectoral Sandpiper 2 Harney Rd. pond: Wood Duck 14 Killdeer 1 Lesser Yellowlegs 8 Solitary Sandpiper 1 Least Sandpiper 11 Semipal. Sandpiper 40 White-rumped Sand. 1 Baird's Sandpiper 1 Pectoral Sandpiper 10 Also, Whip-poor-wills are still singing at the Patuxent Research Refuge, North Tract. Anne Arundel Co. I tallied 16 this morning (3 Sep) during a pre-dawn survey. Stan Arnold Glen Burnie
