Hi again, While reporting Ottavio Janni's observations to Jane Hill this morning, she told me that someone whose name I unfortunately cannot remember reported seeing a Black Skimmer at Georgetown Reservoir at 10:40 am this morning (Sept. 7, 1999). Lisa Shannon and I arrived at the reservoir just before or right around 1 pm and saw the bird sitting on the low dike paralleling MacArthur Blvd (on the right side as you face the reservoir). It was there at 1:30 when we and two other observers left. The skimmer flew briefly during our observation but landed nearby. It was clearly a Black Skimmer, with the long red-based undershot bill, dark chocolate brown upperparts, long narrow wings, red legs, and white underparts. This may be the first DC sighting since about 1985. Best, Rob Hilton robert@csa.com Bethesda, Md.
