Birding in St. Mary's County today, 9/11, partly with Nancy and Elliot Kirschbaum. I started at Sandgates and got a few minutes of close-up video of the Kelp Gull at the Seabreeze Restaurant from about 0815-0830. Spent about 4 hours at Point Lookout. There were very few few terns about. Mostly Forster's with at least one Caspian. There was some landbird activity to make up for the loss of terns. Seen in the woods or at the point were: 1 unidentified Empidonax, 10 Red-eyed Vireos, 1 Veery, 1 Thrasher, 1 Chestnut-sided Warbler, 6 Magnolia Warblers, 2 Black-throated Blue Warblers, 1 Black-throated Green Warbler, 9 Black-&-white Warblers, 4 Redstarts, 1 Northern Waterthrush, 6 Yellowthroats, 1 female Hooded Warbler, 1 male Canada Warbler, and 1 Rose-breasted Grosbeak. Also 19 species of butterflies. At Cornfield Harbor: 1 Great Egret, 1 Kestrel, 1 Peregrine, 1 Kingbird, 4 Brown-headed Nuthatches, 1 Chestnut-sided Warbler, 1 Pine Warbler, and 1 Redstart. At Scotland (Long Neck Road): 8 Great Egrets, 12 Snowy Egrets, 1 Blue-winged Teal, 1 Shoveler, 4 Killdeer, 1 Greater Yellowlegs, 25 Semi Sandpipers, 50 Forster's Terns, and 2 Least Terns. The latter are the latest I have ever seen. Also 5 additional butterflies. Bob Ringler
