Spent a couple hours last evening observing the COMMON MOORHEN at Centennial Park. This was an (almost) county bird for me, the only other sighting I had was years ago and those were babies only. It was quite exciting to see this beautiful bird! We found out that this bird has actually been last Friday and then spotted again this morning. It was quite easy to see if you were LOOKING FOR IT. It fed openly along the side of the middle island, walking along the shoreline or feeding in the water just off the bank. It was also seen this morning walking on the lilly pads. He decided to go to sleep after feeding and my guess is he might stay at the park for awhile. Morning and afternoon (we saw him from 5:45 -7:00) are probably the best times. I'd either park on Centennial lane before the bridge at the wildlife end and walk up the south side of the lake to the second island, or park at the west end lot and walk around and scan the entire area. While we there he spent almost the entire time against the shore of the second island up from the bridge. We were viewing him from the 108 side of the lake (opposite side of the lake from the tennis courts). Bonnie Ott (Howard County) Moorhen is #188 for my year list!
