Hi All: 13 birders from 4 states including MD, NJ, DE and PA as well as various counties in Maryland enjoyed a productive day at Turkey Point on this scheduled field trip. >From the hawk watch, our best flight day yet for the season with 170 raptors tallied between 9am-3pm, surprisingly good flight for minimal winds from the south. 29 KESTRELS , with 12 of these occurring in the last hour. Our first PEREGRINE for the season at 9:30 am, with 4 total for the day. A single MERLIN came through in the afternoon. BROADWINGS occurred sporadically all day, 34 total. SHARPSHINS numerous as always at 73. A life and death chase took place at close range between latter and warbler chasee, warbler narrowly escaping with its life. Also, COOPS, 12, TV- 6, BE-7, OS-5, RT-1 , UF-1, UR-1. Passerines were not too shabby either!! George Jett spotted the CONNETICUT WARBLER( lifer for some present including myself, thanks fellas ) and confirmed by Greg Miller. In the same area of trees/shrub were PHILADELPHIA VIREO, WARBLING VIREO,RED-EYED VIREO, TENNESSEE, BLACK and WHITE, PARULA, MAGNOLIA AND REDSTART. BLACKPOLL and BLACK-THROATED BLUE were also spotted along the way. Fall male SCARLET TANAGER were present and lingering INDIGO BUNTING. A pair of ROYAL TERN ( either Greg/George ) were spotted at the point itself. RED-HEADED WOODPECKERS showed themselves several times. RED-BREASTED NUTHATCH seem particularly abundant this year, again present today. Leslie Fisher
