Some people have expressed curiosity about total numbers of Lincoln's sparrows we have found in Howard. Starting in the end of September through today I have a total of 33 individuals(personally and I know of maybe a dozen more sightings by others). Interestingly the 2 highest counts were both on field trips with large groups, 5 one day and 7 on another. Keep in mind that if you are thinking of ratios these Lincoln's were about 1 to 50(mixed sparrows). This is TOTALLY unscientific but my own poor estimates. I have come to the conclusion that they are almost always found near water of some kind. Streams, marshes (near and in cattails) and by small ponds. They love brushy cover, thickets and cattails. With the exception of Font Hill and its paved paths I find them most often by "beating the bushes" and thrashing through tough stuff. (But that is true with most sparrows :) ). They seem to be more quiet than most other common sparrows. Out of the 33 I saw I only heard their sweet little "chup" call note 3 times. And I rarely heard their version of "seet" notes. Bonnie Ott
