Charlie,

Calvert Cliffs is indeed one of the two traditional
spots for Red-headed Woodpecker in Southern Maryland.
The other is Pt Lookout St Pk.

I have not been to Calvert Cliffs since this spring,
but RHWO was present during the MOS convention. I
have not enjoyed the good success rate of others
visiting the location. It's certainly not guaranteed.
The best spot is the swampy area along the Red Trail.
Walk out the little boardwalk and carefully scan all
the dead snags. I've also seen them along the White
Trail, so keep your eyes and ears open the whole
time...

As for Pt Lookout, I have not seen RHWO since last
year. Maybe someone else has had better luck. They
used to be gimme birds. <sigh> To get to the best
location, walk behind the museum to the "T" and turn
left. Look for the birds on either side of the trail
in all the dead snags.

My most recent sighting of RHWO is not from Southern
Maryland, but from Turkey Point in Cecil last month.
RHWO can be seen from the hawk watch location...
