Hi folks I've been asked to post this for Chris Swarth. Any replies should be sent to him at jugbay@clark.net. Waterbird Sightings Needed Chris Swarth and Judy Burke are preparing a paper for publication on the current and historical use by waterbirds of the Jug Bay region of the Patuxent River. Our summary focuses primarily on the non-breeding season, which for most species is the period between mid-August and mid-May. We are interested only in waterbirds: loons, grebes, rails, herons, egrets, ospreys, bald eagles, harriers, waterfowl, plovers, sandpipers, gulls, terns and kingfishers. We have summarized 15 years of censuses conducted at the Jug Bay Wetlands Sanctuary, as well as a smaller dataset collected by staff and volunteers at Patuxent River Park and the Merkle Wildlife Sanctuary. We want our paper to represent as complete a picture as possible of the waterbirds that use Jug Bay during the non-breeding season. Therefore we are asking others in the birding community if they have records they would like to share with us in order to add to the data we already have. All bird sightings will be credited to those who made them. We are seeking especially: 1. records of large concentrations of any species of waterbirds 2. records of unusual or rare species of waterbirds (please include written details that confirm your identification) 3. especially late dates (late spring dates prior to departure) and early dates (late summer or early fall) We need your records by January 15, 2000. Records or data can be sent to us at: Jugbay@clark.net or by mail to: Jug Bay Wetlands Sanctuary, 1361 Wrighton Rd., Lothian, MD 20711. Thanks very much.
