Crane seekers - The Sandhill Crane near Easton was present this morning, November 12th, at 9:30 a.m. Good viewing of the bird was fully available from Tarbutton Mill Road. The bird was feeding in the meadow behind and to the right of the pond, with a dozen or so Canada Geese near by. Elsewhere in the field or on the pond there were several hundred Canada Geese and a few Mallards. Sandy seemed very happy in the company of the Canadas. Most of the time his head was down while feeding, but when he did lift it, his neck appeared relatively thick and his facial markings were pretty light. This is a tall bird! When Canada Geese passed close by, it seemed that his leg length was about the same as the full height of the Geese. (Yesterday, near noon, I had checked for the Crane with no success. The pond is his resting place, but he probably goes elsewhere to feed at certain times of the day. Most reliable viewing will likely be during morning or evening hours.)
