Bryan Blazie, Jim Stasz, Brian Monk, George Jett, and I refound the Pacific Loon near the mouth of Broad Creek this morning. Viewing was frankly awful because of heat shimmer and we ID'ed the bird on size, shape, bill size, and gross plumage pattern, all made easier by direct comparison with a Common Loon. The high wind and heavy chop did not help. Thanks to Jim's experienced eyes, we had a Golden Eagle, seen soaring over the Harford side of the river, a new year bird for me. My thanks to Jim for remembering to look at the rest of the world. Thanks to Bryan Blazie's young eyes, we had an adult Northern Goshawk in the area around Magnolia Road on Aberdeen Proving Ground. We chased the bird around a bit, getting two pretty decent looks. That makes 246 for the year in Harford, and the Gos was a new county bird for my all-time list, number 285.
