The Pacific Loon was still holding court at Bald friar Road on Friday afternoon, although much of the time the distance and the high wind made ID tough. Despite the overcast and the rain, which are perfect this time of year, there were not many other birds moving. We had one flock of 23 OLDSQUAW, all males, fly by, and about 40 RED BREASTED MERGANSERS, all females, and 10 COMMON MERGANSERS, also females. The COMMON LOON count peaked at 18, but two of us had a RED-THROATED LOON close to the Cecil side. At least until tomorrow I suspect we are the only two observers who have ever seen all three loons at the same time in Maryland, a very minor distinction at best but one that amused us at the time. The were also about 75 BONAPARTE'S GULLS and 6 FORSTER'S TERNS. The highlight (for me, not the others) was a flock of 12 adult LAUGHING GULLS flying down the river, a good, late, inland number. At the base of the dam at dusk we found two adult LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULLS. In a field along Rt. 136 in the morning I found a flock fo 700 RING-BILLED GULLS which also had 22 LAUGHING GULLS. Go figure. Rick If you can't annoy someone, there is little point in writing. -- Kingsley Amis Rick Blom rblom@blazie.com 4318 Cowan Place Belcamp, Maryland 21017 (410)575-6086
