Howdy All! In addition to the other great references listed already, I'll put in my 2 cents for a lesser-known CD. Produced by Lanius Software, _North American Birds Reference Book_, is also decent with many photos and bird songs. It includes rudimentary range maps, field descriptions, and even breeding bird survey trend numbers for many species. I am a fan of the random bird song and bird photo quizzes (which can be anything from easy to difficult). Some of the photos include female, immature/juvenile, or molting birds. A new addition to the CD is the bird listing software, Excalibur 2000, formerly sold separately. It is adequate for maintaining anything from site-specific lists to a North American life list (including county/state lists, month lists, year lists, etc). And for the money, it's pretty hard to beat at $29.95. It's not the cream of the crop by any means, but it is an affordable option for someone wanting to invest in learning more about birds. Also, it follows world listing nomenclature so a few birds like Black-necked Grebe (Eared Grebe) and Buff-bellied Pipit (American Pipit) might be initially confusing. Well...I didn't mean to get verbose on this one. Hope everyone enjoyed the holiday. Last year at this time I was wading thigh deep in Everglades quagmire searching for my nemesis Flamingo...yup...the now infamous "canoe story". To anyone who missed reading last year's swamp fiasco, I'll post the story again on my web site later this week. <grin> -Greg Miller Hollywood, MD http://users.erols.com/gregorym __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!?
