Hi Folks, I took a walk around Lake Elkhorn, south of Columbia, this afternoon, and while scanning some thick vegetation loaded with House Sparrows, chanced upon a bird with a lot of yellow on its lower throat and upper breast. It had me totally perplexed--yellow over the eye, and a little bit under the eye, no streaking at all; fairly dark primaries, but more of a sparrow-like dorsal pattern and coloration. Then, through all the brambles, I was able to get a look at a not-too-subtle chestnut shoudler patch. Conclusion: adult female DICKCISSEL. I studied the bird for several minutes before resuming my walk. It was located in vegetation near the edge of the water on the north side of the lake, not too far past the dam, when approaching from the main road (Broken Land Pkwy). It was hanging out with a couple dozen house sparrows. The only other bird of interest during the walk was a BROWN CREEPER on the south side of the lake, giving me two new county birds for the day.
