Kevin Fehskens and I led some C. Milton Wright high schoolers around the county looking for birds for a school project. We started the day looking for an absent Pacific Loon on Bald Friar Rd. and ended at Edgewood Arsenal. Conowingo produced Lesser Black-backed Gull, but there was not much else of interest. The trail below the dam was pretty deserted with the exception of an excellent Pileated Woodpecker. A stop at the traditional Red-headed Woodpecker spot did not produce any Red-headeds, but we did have an adult Golden Eagle soaring overhead! We checked for the Thrasher and Catbirds that Rick Blom had found the day before, but we didn't have such luck. A swing by Lapidum landing produced Hooded Merganser, Double-crested Cormorant, and lots of silhoutted ducks. Tydings Marina had a few Ruddy Ducks hanging out under hte dock. A wet meadow near Swan Harbor was loaded with Savannah Sparrows. The pond near Perryman produced good numbers of Gadwall and a few American Wigeon. The fields in Perryman had fair numbers of White-crowned and Tree Sparrows as well as raptors. There were atleast 3 Kestrels, 3 Harriers and 2 Red-tails. We didn't find the goodies that Rick did in the Scaup flock on Hoadley Rd mainly because of the wind and lighting. And the pines in Edgewood were fairly quiet. In all it was a good day of birding with 71 species recorded. Matt Hafner Bel Air, MD
