Made the trip to Port Mahon this am (Sun) and saw the Snowy Owl. It was on some pilings half way between the bait shop and end of the road. It appears that it might have been wounded (shot?) sometime yesterday. It has reddish stains on the belly, breast and back to the nape of the neck. There also appears to be broken feathers sticking out on the left side of its breast near the shoulder. That is the bad news, the good news was an incredible raptor day, a personal best I am sure. A Rough-legged Hawk was on a pole by the road leading to Pt Mahon and a least 3 Short-eared Owl were hunting in the marshes around the Snowy. A good photographer could have gotten both in the same shot. The total came to 14 1/2 raptor species. Rough-legged Hawk Short-eared Owl Snowy Owl Harrier Kestrel (many) Bald Eagle (imm at Bombay Hook) Turkey Vulture Black Vulture Sharp-shinned Hawk (from tower at Little Creek) Red-tailed Hawk Red-shouldered Hawk (on road to Broadkill Beach) Peregrine Falcon (on lighthouse at Cape Henlopen) Great Horned Owl & Osprey (both at Gordon Pond @ Cape Henlopen) The half was a Loggerhead Shrike at Broadkill Beach. Other highlights included RB & BH Nuthatch, GC & RC Kinglets, all 3 Merg species. Tom Beal Glenn Dale, MD
