The Balt. Harbor CBC, held on Sat., Dec. 18, is not fully compiled, awaiting a couple of territory reports, but the major picture has emerged and it looks like: 99 species (?!? - couldn't get just one more??) approx. 19,00 birds counted by 17 observers in 9 parties in the field (a new low!) :( Highlights included 41 Snow Buntings and 2 Short-eared Owls on Hart-Miller Island, TWO Great Cormorants (new Count high) on the rocks in the Bay west of Ft. Smallwood (just inside the Count circle) among 64 "regular" Double-crested Cormorants, 13 White-winged and 1 Black Scoter spotted out on the Bay from near Ft. Howard, both new highs (first Count record for Black Scoter), and as many MDOsprey readers could have predicted from the postings around the State, a new high for Merlins (3 counted, prev. high 1), 3 Peregrine Falcons, 11 Virginia Rails, 1 probable Orange-crowned Warbler seen briefly in the Waterview west area and not re-found, and for "winter finches" 2 Red-breasted Nuthatches and 3 Purple Finches, but no siskins, crossbills, redpolls or other rarities. In a few weeks, the Baltimore City-County Mid-Winter Count will take place on Jan. 22, covering the city and county, and field observers will be needed to find out what's hanging around into the coldest part of the winter in our area. As with the Harbor Count, a Tally will be held at Cylburn Mansion in Baltimore off Greenspring Avenue just south of Northern Parkway, with doors opening at 4:30 and the Tally taking place about 6 pm or whenever most of the expected participants have arrived and counted up their daily totals.
