Hi all,
There were several swans at Hughes Hollow this morning. There was an
immature that was swimming around the far east end of the east pond, and
then flew over to the west side while I was walking around that pond. I'm
not that familar with immature swans and it is difficult to tell the size of
single birds for comparison purposes. The bill on this one was pink, with
black at the base, maybe a bit of a bump at the top, but definitely pink and
black. Neck was straight (most of the time). The bird was mostly white with
only a bit of gray across the back. Question, are Mute Swans ever seen
outside of the Chesapeak Bay area?
While walking back from the field area, a second swan flew over in the
direction of the river. The first swan was still on the east pond when I
left around 10:30.

Other birds of note were 3-4 Pied-billed Grebes, 3 coots and both
Blue-winged and Green-winged Teal. Lots of Yellow-rumped Warblers and Tree
Swallows.

good birding,
Tom Ewert
