Winds of yesterday blew away much of the water on Leeds Creek,
leaving a mud flat in front of my house - which was promptly used by three
Greater Yellowlegs (new yard birds for the year). Yesterday morning there
were two Common Loons on the water (before it blew away) - also new yard
birds for the year. This morning, in the remnant winds, two Bonaparte's
Gulls flew by this place (also new yard birds for the year).
The Pine Siskin is again present amongst the 20+ Goldfinches at my
thistle feeders. This bird was probably around continuously since my last
sighting - it was not reported because I was not around to see it. Some 30
White-throated Sparrows were right outside my window moments ago - feasting
in a warm sunny spot.
The Canada Goose on our Osprey platform seems to be doing fine. She
has now plucked lots of her own down, and has used that as nest liner
material for her eggs - of which there are several. A Male Osprey came in
for a couple of days last week, and tried a few times to get her to leave.
She stayed - the Osprey left, and that seems to be the end of that
competition. So now we will have to just enjoy the watching as we await the
hatching of the baby geese. We are hoping to see them drop from the
platform to the water!
