Dear Sue -
I am just astounded by the fantastic day of 1000+ hawks at Fort
Smallwood on 04_09. Thank you for the report.

    Move over Cape May!

Weather:
Morning haze followed by partly cloudy skies; 48-60 degrees; winds mostly
from the northwest, 8-16 mph.

Observations:
After a much slower day, the hawks came in droves again! A stunning
flight. A new one-day record for kestrels: 387 (old record 362), and the
largest one-day flights of sharp-shins and Merlins on record this early in
the season. These two recent big days are unusual for us in that they've
been powered mostly by non-vultures and non-broadwings.

44 Common Loons; 2 Red-throated Loons; 25 Horned Grebes; 18 Great Blue
Herons; thousands of Tree Swallows, 12 Barn Swallows and about 35 Northern
Rough-winged Swallows.
