Folks

While out looking for Glossy Ibis yesterday I had a couple other birds of note besides the Snowy and Cattle Egret. The most unusual sighting was a male Surf Scoter swimming in Allen's Fresh. The guy must have come down during the storm on the nearest water body he could find while migrating. This species is generally along Cobb Island in good years, but I have never had one at Allen's Fresh in my many years of birding there. A lovely but shy bird on this interior water body. It stayed a good distance, so no good photo op.

In the rain, I also had several Great Blue Heron, three Wood Duck, one male Kestrel, one juvenile Bald Eagle, one Blue-gray Gnatcatcher, and a pair each of Eastern Phoebes and Towhees at Mattawoman Creek at the corner of Rt. 224/225.

The common three swallow species were around as well - Tree, Barn, and Northern Rough-winged Swallow.

The Ovenbird continues to sing at the house this am. The Swamp Sparrow also continues to feed here, and my Rusty Blackbird male remains.

Gone birding.

George
