The Queen Anne's County High School Birding Team is again heading to the
World Series of Birding (WSB). This year the team will consist of Ben
Thiesse, Jim Wilson and Will Covington.
During the Cape May Fall Weekend in October 2003, a chance encounter
with Dennis Pegg, Captain of the Steiner Peregrines WSB entry, lead to
this outstanding youth team gaining the sponshorship of Steiner
Binoculars. They will be the Steiner Team Merlin.

On 9 April, the team visited the Steiner facility in Moorestown, NJ, to
pick up their loaner Steiner Peregrine and Merlin binoculars and various
hats and shirts. They also met with the Steiner senior team and began
plotting scouting strategies and route discussions for the WSB. These
youth will be out honing their birding skills in Maryland for the next
month. They will be scouting in New Jersey over Mother's Day Weekend
and then head to Cape May on 12 May for more scouting and the
competition. If you happen to see them, ask to check out their Steiner
binoculars and wish them luck at the WSB.

These 3 kids are "graduates" of George Radcliffe's Centreville Middle
School Birding Teams. Mr. Radcliffe has been teaching science in Queen
Anne's County for many years. Five years ago, George decided to enter
teams in the youth category at the WSB and won Division A in 2001
(captained by Zach Baer) and again in 2003. They have 2 more teams
entering the competition again this year. Keep up the good work, George!
If you have any questions about the WSB or the youth teams, please do
not hesitate to send me an email.
Jim Wilson, SR.
