This morning, along the Potomac River in Washington Co., there were two Great
Egrets on a tree limb in the middle of a Great Blue Heron heronry located on
an island in the Potomac. This is the same location where Great Egrets were
last year, i.e., about 1/4 to 1/2 mile downstream from Sandy Hook, about
opposite milepost 59 on the C & O Canal. I don't know if the Great Egrets that were
there last year successfully nested there or not but perhaps someone else has
that info..

Other interesting birds along the C & O Canal were many singing Warbling
Vireos, quite a few singing Baltimore Orioles, a number of warblers including
Louisiana Waterthrush, Yellow-thoated, N. Parula, Yellow, B.T. Green, Am. Redstart
and Yellow-rumped. Also, there were two pair of Common Ravens flying over
the river and adjacent land; one pair near the bridge to Shepherdstown and the
other pair downstream from Dargan's Boat Landing. Also, along the river, a
Broad-winged Hawk was being harassed by a pair of crows, 3 Rusty Blackbirds were
flying about in the trees and one Bobwhite sang out along Canal Road. There
were a number of D.C. Cormorants near the bridge at Shepherdstown. (I think
someone had asked about that earlier.)

Along Snavely's Ford trail at Antietam, among other birds, there was a pair
of Barred Owls staring down at me from a limb over the trail, a tom Turkey
landed nearby and there were 6 Red-breasted Mergansers and a couple pair of Wood
Ducks on the creek along the trail.
