Roosevelt Island, Wash, DC, 16 Apr 04, 1200-1300: What a great day to be
out birding! The Potomac was flowing fast and muddy, and the recent
prolonged rain and high water has flooded much of the habitat ringing the
island. The species of the hour was D-C Cormorant. They were everywhere -
on the water, in the air, or perched in trees. It was fun watching them
swim against the strong current, disappearing under the chocolate colored
water, and occasionally surfacing with a fish. A handful of Barn Swallow
have returned to the nest colony under the access bridge. Twenty-seven
species observed to include the following noteworthy birds: Wood Duck
(3-male/female pairs), Osprey (1-over the Potomac), Pileated Woodpecker
(1-local pair at their usual location along the boardwalk), Brown Thrasher
(1-singing lustily in the treetops), and Louisiana Waterthrush (1-feeding in
a flooded area).
