The DC Veterans Memorial was full of birds today at lunch, including
the following:
Yellow-rumped Warblers (many)
Palm Warblers (2, yellow form)
Ovenbird (1)
Northern Flicker (1)
American Goldfinch (many)
Eastern Towhee (several, calling)
Chipping Sparrows (several)
White-throated Sparrows (several)
(also, resident cardinals, robins, tufted titmice, etc).
(I think the juncos left over the weekend, they were
in the area all last week).
On the Potomac, at the train bridge above DC National
airport, I saw the following:
Two peregrines, one smaller, one larger, were calling,
flying about and perching together on the lines above
the bridge. Another large peregrine flew in, and the
larger peregrine lifted off to confront the newcomer,
eventually chasing it off.
It all looked very territorial to me.
An osprey was on the nest at the train bridge, and
its mate brought it a fish, while all this activity was going
on.
