My family and I have returned from a great trip to Louisiana. It was my
first trip back to my home state as a birder, and I was excited. I saw
several species for the first time on the way there (we drove), while there
and on the way back. But the best sight for me was only a few miles away
from home on the way back. As we were passing over the Potomac out of
Shepherdstown, I spotted ten or so huge black birds sitting in a dead tree
in the middle of the river. I didn't get a really good look at them because
I was half asleep and thoroughly exhausted (and my husband was racing home).
But I did notice they had long necks and were completely black. I got out
my field guide and ran through all the possibilities. I'm 95% certain that
I what I saw were Double-crested Cormorants. I'd love some feedback about
this. Either tell me it's impossible or confirm that they're there!
