This is a good one--osprey deterrent--it brings a smile to my face every
time I think about it. I won't ask the obvious question: Why own a boat
that you don't take out enough so that an osprey even thinks about building
a nest on it? But to answer the question with a straight face--

There are many possible deterrents that could be employed, but the simplest
is probably to use something like Nixalite (stainless steel that looks like
Christmas tree garland on steroids). Nixalite is a commercial product and
they actually sell a variety of "architectural bird control" items. I have
seen their product in use in many applications, and it works well--their web
site is http://www.nixalite.com/

A better and more ecologically pleasant solution would be for the marina
owner to put up a sturdy osprey nest platform or two in good locations.
Obviously there are not enough quality nest sites nearby for this less than
adept pair, and the birds are trying to build on what they think the best
site available to them. I have seen ospreys try to build on the booms of
cranes and pile drivers, the ends of docks, and often on the tops of duck
blinds. Ospreys (generally) aren't stupid. They will choose a good nesting
site over a poor one. However, with the successful comeback of ospreys to
this part of the Bay, there is significant nest site competition in many
parts of their range. Tell the marina owner to put up a platform or
two--his guests and patrons will appreciate the birds raising their young
nearby, and he can take credit for a clever solution.
