Frederick Co. Big Sit at Lily Pons, in conjunction
with their Earth Day festivities, went very well. Some
of our birders arrived at 4 AM and quickly heard the
Canada Geese and Barred Owl. By quitting time, there
were 80 species counted, with the last being a
Carolina Wren! We raised over $1000 for the Atlas,
thanks to many generous donors, a well received raffle
and sales of atlas and other birding material.
The most unexpected birds were northern waterthrush,
broad-winged hawks, ringed-neck ducks, wild turkey,
least sandpiper, orchard and Baltimore oriole and
northern harrier. Misses were northern flicker,
eastern towhee, house sparrow (!), cedar waxwing.
There were other birds seen at LilyPons but they would
not come within range of the optics!!
Thanks to all who counted, raised pledges, donated
raffle items and handled the tables.
